Washington Coal Club Honors Carl Bauer, Susan B. Carver and George Rudins at Annual Awards Dinner

Washington, D.C. – The Washington Coal Club this evening presented the organization’s 2007 Annual Achievement Award to Carl Bauer, director of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), and its 2007 Senator Jennings Randolph Lifetime Achievement Awards to Susan Carver, vice president of congressional affairs (retired) of the National Mining Association NMA, and George Rudins, U.S. Department of Energy deputy assistance secretary for coal and power systems (retired) in the Office of Fossil Energy.

Rep. John Peterson, who represents the 5th District of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives, discussed “Perspectives on Coal’s Role in Congressional Energy Policy,” and General Richard Lawson (retired) provided remarks on “Coal’s Role in Facing the Energy Challenges of Today,” as part of the annual awards event.

Carl Bauer was appointed NETL director in 2006 and oversees the implementation of major science and technology development programs to resolve the environmental, supply and reliability constraints of producing and using fossil resources. His responsibilities include technologies for advanced coal-fueled power generation and hydrogen production; carbon sequestration; environmental control for the existing fleet of coal-fired power plants; and improving the efficiency and environmental quality of domestic oil and natural gas exploration, production and processing.

Susan Carver is a recognized expert in the congressional budget and appropriations processes and has used this expertise to help shepherd a range of coal-based technology programs through Congress—beginning with the first Clean Coal Technology effort through the current FutureGen Project. From 1977 through 2007, Carver advanced through the National Mining Association and its predecessor organization, the National Coal Association, while also serving in various official capacities for the Washington Coal Club, including a term as president in 1995. Over the course of eight presidential administrations, she has been a mainstay of the Washington coal community and the go-to-person for congressional staff and members, alike, who relied upon her knowledge and integrity.

George Rudins retired this year from the U.S. Department of Energy as deputy assistant secretary for coal and power systems in the office of fossil energy. In that capacity, he led a team that, together with NETL, industry and academia, successfully positioned the U.S. as the world leader in clean coal technology and in CO2 capture and storage technology. His team’s successes also have included developing and completing successful commercial demonstration of two IGCC plants and the initiation of a third, the commercial demonstration of advanced combustion systems and emission control systems, and advancing coal liquids technology. The team also initiated the CO2 capture and storage technology development program and launched the global Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum and the program that led to the FutureGen Project.

The Washington Coal Club (WCC) is a non-profit corporation that provides a forum for the discussion of coal-related matters. In 1982, the club initiated the Annual Achievement Award for an individual who has made the most recent meaningful contribution to the coal community. The Senator Jennings Randolph Lifetime Achievement Award was initiated in 1987 in recognition of a lifetime of achievements and dedication to the utilization of coal. Upcoming meetings will be posted on the WCC web site, www.washingtoncoalclub.org. Attendance is welcome, with advance registration.

July 8, 2005

Dear Washington Coal Club Members:

We would like to update you on our Washington Coal Club (WCC) monthly luncheon speaker series schedule and on our WCC Annual Awards Banquet in November 2005, so you can plan to participate at as many of our future meetings as possible.

WCC Annual Awards Banquet -- Although we do not have a firm date yet for our Annual Awards Banquet in November, we will be soliciting the WCC membership to be involved with the 2005 Banquet Steering Committee. We will be scheduling meetings to seek nominations for our annual WCC awardees. We will keep you informed of our progress, and solicit your own nominees for these prestigious awards.

June 2005 – We had confirmed David Conover, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, U.S. DOE Policy & International to speak to us about the "Administration's Climate Change Program." However, the Annual Energy Efficiency Forum (with President Bush giving a major energy policy address as well as other dignitaries) was scheduled in the Ronald Reagan Building for the exact same date and time as our WCC luncheon meeting. We realized many of our usual WCC members were already confirmed for the Energy Efficiency Forum, so we cancelled our June WCC meeting, and invited all confirmed WCC attendees to join us with a complimentary invitation for the Energy Efficiency Forum. We are delighted many of you participated, and even our WCC speaker, David Conover, joined us.

July 2005 -- For many years the WCC was on recess of the months of July and August. However a couple of years ago, we began holding July luncheon meetings, unfortunately attendance has generally been low, and although Judd Swift, Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Affairs, U.S. DOE, Office of Fossil Energy, is scheduled to speak to us July 13, the WCC Officers have decided to cancel the luncheon meeting due to several factors. Therefore, the July 13 meeting will not be held.

August 2005 – WCC is on recess.

September 14, 2005 – Please mark your calendars for this meeting, as David Conover, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, U.S. DOE, Office of Policy & International has confirmed as our speaker on the topic of the "Administration's Climate Change Program." David is an excellent speaker, highly regarded on this important subject. I hope you all will join us on Wednesday, September 14.

Vacant WCC Officer (Vice President) Position – As some of you may we aware, our WCC Vice President, John Shelk, resigned last month since he took an excellent new position and departed National Mining Association (NMA). We are now looking for people interested in serving the rest of John's term as WCC Vice President for the remainder of CY 2005. Please contact Anita Bedrosian (anita.bedrosian@hq.doe.gov) or myself (rdonovan@usea.org) if you are personally interested, or if you know of a colleague you think we should contact directly.

Finally, please enjoy your summer, be safe, and we hope to see you all on Wednesday, September 13 at our next regularly scheduled WCC luncheon meeting.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the WCC.

Sincerely,
2005 Washington Coal Club Officers

June 10, 2005

Dear Washington Coal Club Members:

Despite the two weeks advanced notice for the June 15th Washington Coal Club (WCC) luncheon meeting, plus a number of large-energy events being conducted on the same day, we have to cancel the Wednesday, June 15th WCC luncheon. However, for those of you already confirmed for the luncheon event, please contact our WCC president, Rob Donovan at (202) 312-1238 or vial email at rdonovan@usea.org for a complimentary invitation which includes lunch at one of the other major events being held that day.

Please mark your calendar now for our July 13, 2005 luncheon meeting.

Sincerely,
2005 Washington Coal Club Officers

WASHINGTON'S COAL COMMUNITY HONORS INDUSTRY, CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS
NMA's Gerard, Sen. Inhofe and Caterpillar's Barton Win Coal Club's 2004 Awards

Washington – The Washington Coal Club tonight honored three individuals for their outstanding contributions to the coal community at the Club's Annual Awards Banquet at the National Press Club.

Coal Club president Paul Oakley announced that National Mining Association (NMA) President and CEO, Jack Gerard, and U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK) were co-winners of the Club's 2004 Annual Achievement Awards. Glen A. Barton, former Chairman and CEO of Caterpillar Inc., won the Club's 2004 Senator Jennings Randolph Lifetime Achievement Award.

NMA's Gerard was praised for his energetic efforts in championing coal-based power in his position as the industry's leading spokesman at the Washington trade group. In only his first few years as president, Gerard is credited with transforming NMA into a leaner and more effective advocacy organization. "Coal has needed a champion, and it has found a great one in Jack Gerard," said Oakley in making the announcement.

Sen. Inhofe's support for clean coal technology and comprehensive energy legislation were two of the reasons he was honored by the Coal Club. Inhofe, Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, has been an articulate and forceful spokesman for balanced energy policies that recognize the fundamental importance of coal to the nation's energy supply.

Former Caterpillar chief executive Barton was exceedingly influential in a host of education and civic initiatives that foreshadowed the wider corporate responsibilities eventually adopted by other companies. As leader of one of the world's leading mining equipment manufacturers, he served effectively as Chairman of NMA's Manufacturing and Services Division and Chairman of MINExpo 2000.

The Washington Coal Club, organized in 1980, is an informal organization of government, industry and academic representatives interested in coal and coal-related energy policies and issues that hosts lunches featuring prominent speakers that include Members of Congress, Administration officials, industry leaders and scientists and other academicians.
