Environment Subcommittee of the Transportation and
Infrastructure Committee

The Washington Coal Club is pleased to announce that the speaker for the luncheon on May 11, 2005 will be The Honorable John J. Duncan, Jr. (R-TN), Chairman of the House Water Resources and the Environment Subcommittee of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee – and the WCC’s 2005 Congressional Sponsor. Representative Duncan also serves on the Committees on Resources and Government Reform.

Chairman Duncan will talk about the Congressional agenda for the remainder of the 1 st session of the 109th Congress and the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee. This subcommittee has jurisdiction over the Civil Works program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, including projects for navigation, water supply, environmental restoration, in addition to the Corps’ regulatory activities on Section 404 permits (disposal of dredged or fill material) under the Clean Water Act. This subcommittee also oversees wetlands protection and enhancement, as well as the Superfund program, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation.

Representative Duncan was born in Lebanon, Tennessee on July 21, 1947. After attending public schools in Knoxville, he earned a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Tennessee in 1969 – he then attended the George Washington University Law Center where he earned a law degree in 1973. Following law school, Representative Duncan established a private law practice in Knoxville. In1981, then Tennessee Governor, Lamar Alexander, appointed Representative Duncan as State Trial Judge, a position he held until his election to Congress in 1988.
