The Washington Coal Club (WCC) is pleased to announce its March 9, 2005 distinguished featured speakers: Ruth Shaw, President and CEO of Duke Power Company and Irl F. Engelhardt, Chairman and CEO of Peabody Energy, the Co-Chairs of the Coal Based Generation Stakeholders Group (CBGS).

These two industry leaders will be announcing to the members of the press and the WCC, the release of a CBGS paper entitled, A Vision for Achieving Ultra-Low Emissions from Coal-Fueled Electric Generation. GBGS is a diverse group of investor owned utilities, rural electric cooperatives, public power companies, coal producers and coal hauling railroads.

This long-term vision of coal-fueled electricity in the United States represents the consensus of Chief Executive Officers from our nation’s largest coal consumers, rail carriers and producers, and the Presidents of the Association that represent them. As our most abundant domestic energy resource, coal is vital to ensuring low-cost electricity for an economically prosperous future.

The CBGS paper stresses that in an era of rising energy costs, low-cost electricity from coal improves the quality of life, strengthens the economy, protects national security, and offers the best potential for increasing energy independence. These goals can be accomplished while working toward continuous improvement in emissions, with an ultimate goal of ultra-low emissions from coal fueled electricity.

Please note that there will be very limited seating available, and the time change under agenda.
