Future Direction in Coal R&D

The Washington Coal Club is pleased to announce its December 8, 2004 meeting will feature Rita Bajura, Director of National Energy Technology Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy.

Ms. Rita A. Bajura is the Director of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), a national laboratory owned and operated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). As part of DOE’s national laboratory system, NETL conducts research spanning DOE’s energy, science, national security, and environmental quality missions.

As NETL Director, Ms. Bajura oversees the implementation of major science and technology development programs to resolve the environmental, supply, and reliability constraints of producing and using fossil resources. This includes technologies for –

Nearly 600 federal and 550 contractor employees work at NETL’s sites in Fairbanks, Alaska; Morgantown, West Virginia; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Research and development activities are conducted both onsite and through partnerships and contractual arrangements with industry, universities, and other research organizations. The 1,100 projects in NETL’s portfolio are conducted at facilities in all 50 states and in several foreign countries.

Ms. Bajura has guided NETL as Director since 1996, and has been with the DOE since 1980. She earned a master’s degree in engineering from West Virginia University and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania.

In 2000, Ms. Bajura was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Alumni of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics at West Virginia University. In 2001, she was appointed by the Governor of West Virginia to the State’s Energy Policy Task Force, and the Washington Coal Club (WCC) selected her to receive its annual Achievement Award for contributions to the coal industry. In 2002, she was the first woman ever to receive the “Pitt Award,” the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering’s Annual Award for Innovation in Coal Conversion, and she received the Presidential Rank Award of Meritorious Executive.
