The Washington Coal Club is pleased to announce its May 14, 2003 meeting will feature Mr. Ben Yamagata, Executive Director, Coal Utilization Research Council (CURC).
Ben Yamagata is Executive Director of the Coal Utilization Research Council (CURC) and has worked in that capacity since 1998. CURC is an ad-hoc industry group, composed of a diverse array of state, university and business interests. CURC members work together to promote coal utilization research and development and build collaborative, effective partnerships between the various sectors of the coal industry and government to commercialize new coal technologies. Additionally, Mr. Yamagata has been a partner in the Washington D.C. law firm of Van Ness Feldman since 1979. His practice at Van Ness Feldman encompasses federal and state legislative and administrative issues in the areas of energy, environment, natural resources, international trade (technology transfer and independent power project development), and transportation-related matters.
Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Yamagata was employed as Counsel and Staff Director to the Subcommittee on Energy Research and Development of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
Mr. Yamagata received his B.A. from Harvard College in 1969, and his J.D. from the George Washington University National Law Center in 1972. Mr. Yamagata is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and the state of Idaho. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar and the Idaho State Bar Association.
