“OVERVIEW OF CONGRESSIONAL LEGISLATION”

The Honorable Melissa A. Hart
U.S. House of Representatives
(R-PA, 4th District)

The Washington Coal Club is pleased to announce its June 11, 2003 meeting will feature The Honorable Melissa A. Hart (R-PA, 4th District).

Prior to first taking office in Congress in 2000, Congresswoman Hart served in the Pennsylvania Senate for 10 years. She chaired the powerful Finance Committee and helped deliver over four billion dollars in tax cuts and other savings to Pennsylvania taxpayers and small businesses. In her 10 years in the state Senate, Hart saw many of her reforms signed into law, including: an Administrator Control Incentive law that provides fiscal incentives for school districts that reduce top-heavy bureaucracies and put more funds directly into the classroom; keeping internet access service tax free; and exempting more low-income, working families from paying state income taxes.

Congresswoman Hart is the first female Republican from Pennsylvania elected to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, and was the first female Republican elected to a full term in the state Senate.

A native of Allegheny County, Congresswoman Hart graduated from North Allegheny High School, and earned her bachelor’s degree from Washington & Jefferson College. She went on to earn a law degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
