Representative John E. Peterson
(R-Pennsylvania, 5th District)
The Washington Coal Club is pleased to announce its September 12, 2002 meeting will feature Representative John E. Peterson (R-Pennsylvania, 5th District).
Representative Peterson was first elected to serve Pennsylvania’s Fifth Congressional District in 1996. A native Pennsylvanian, Peterson was born in Titusville on December 25, 1938. He graduated from Titusville High School and attended Pennsylvania State University.
Mr. Peterson served both active and reserve duty in the U.S. Army from 1957 through 1963. After his honorable discharge as a Specialist Second Class, Peterson owned and operated a retail food market in his hometown. He served on the Borough Council for eight years before his election to the Pennsylvania House of Representative in 1977. In 1984, he was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate. During his 12 years as a member of the Pennsylvania Senate, Peterson chaired the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee and the Republican Policy Committee.
Mr. Peterson is a Member of the House Appropriations Committee, where he serves on the Interior and Related Agencies; Labor; Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies; Treasury, Postal Service and General Government Subcommittees. He is also a Member of the Resources Committee and serves on the Forests and Forest Health Subcommittees.
