The Technology Imperative: The Necessity of Coal
In a Carbon-Constrained World

Ken Humphreys
Carbon Management Initiative, Director
Sustainable Technology Development, Chief Engineer
Battelle

The Washington Coal Club is pleased to announce its May 8, 2002 meeting will feature Ken Humphreys, Carbon Management Initiative, Director and Sustainable Technology Development, Chief Engineer of Battelle.

Over the past three years, through a government-industry partnership, Battelle has been assessing the role that technology can play in addressing the long-term risks of climate change. This includes: evaluating the role of a diversity of fuels (coal, oil, gas, nuclear, solar, etc.) in our energy future; ascertaining what critical technologies need to be developed at what points in time; and exploring minimum cost strategies to address climate change while preserving economic growth.

The study findings suggest that a window of opportunity exists in the first decade of this century to develop a next generation of fossil-based technologies that can preserve the economic viability of coal in a carbon-constrained world. Conversely, failure to develop these advanced fossil technologies in the short-term may place the coal industry at an economic disadvantage and result in significantly higher electricity costs.

The presentation will summarize study findings and suggest a potential path forward for the industry that simultaneously ensures the continued viability of the coal industry and manages the potential risks associated with a pressing environmental challenge – climate change.
