The Future of Coal Research & Development

John Wootten
Vice President, Environment & Technology
Peabody Energy

The Washington Coal Club is pleased to announce its April 10, 2002 meeting will feature John Wootten, Vice President Environment and Technology, Peabody Energy.

As a key person working to enhance the future for coal production and coal fired power generation in the United States for the nation’s largest coal company, Peabody Energy, John is well positioned to give a private sector analysis of the importance of the Department of Energy’s R&D program and its relationship to meeting our nation’s energy, environmental and economic objectives.

Through his extensive work with the National Mining Association (NMA), Coal Utilization Research Council (CURC), the Coal Industry Advisory Board to the International Energy Agency and the National Research Council’s Strategic Assessment of U.S. Department of Energy’s Coal Program and R&D Opportunities for Advanced Fossil-Fueled Energy Complexes, Mr. Wootten will share his observations with coal club members and guests on the technological advancements necessary to continue progress toward the near-zero emission power plant of the future and the importance of the various components of the Coal R&D budget – research, development and demonstration. In addition to mapping the steps necessary to meeting future objectives, John will share his thoughts on whether the Administration’s proposed FY 2003 budget for Coal R&D will support that effort.
