Washington Coal Club

History

The Washington Coal Club (WCC) is a District of Columbia non-profit corporation, which began prior to 1980 as a small informal group with a mutual interest in coal. The group met at lunch to discuss coal-related topics. These activities were formalized during 1980 to 1981 to provide a structure for organization of the WCC.

Purpose

The Club’s purpose is to provide a scheduled meeting place and a forum with knowledgeable speakers for the discussion of any and all coal-related matters that may be of interest to its members.

Membership

The Club’s constituency consists of over 300 individuals with diverse interests in coal, ranging from its production through its utilization. The membership roster includes coal producers and transporters, legislators - both Federal and State, associations focused on coal’s role in the American economy, academics involved in coal-related research, and policy makers from both the executive and legislative branches of government. Visitors are welcome to participate in our programs. Individuals become members by participating in Club activities. Answers to frequently asked questions are provided in the attachment.

Corporate Sponsorship

Several levels of annual sponsorship are available. Various benefits are provided to WCC sponsors based on the level of sponsorship they wish to contribute. Corporate sponsors are recognized by their various levels of sponsorship on the WCC website and in meeting announcements.

Silver Sponsor - $500 annually

Gold Sponsor - $1,000 annually
Gold sponsorship covers the cost for one corporate participant lunch at each monthly meeting and one ticket for the annual awards banquet

Platinum Sponsor - $3,000 annually
Platinum sponsorship covers cost for one corporate participant lunch at each monthly meeting and one table for the annual awards banquet

Luncheon Programs

Our main activity is a luncheon-meeting program, which is held on the second Wednesday of every month. The meeting place is usually in the Rayburn House Office Building on the Capitol Hill. Programs begin with a social hour at 11:30 AM followed by lunch at 12:30 PM. The featured speaker makes his/her presentation 1:00 PM and engages in a question and answer dialog with the attendees as time permits. The program, including any Club business, which is conducted, concludes before 2:00 PM. A listing of previous speakers is presented in the attachment.

Awards

In either November or December, the Club hosts its annual dinner program. As a gala occasion, black tie is optional. In 1982, the Club initiated an annual Achievement Award to honor an individual who has recently made a meaningful contribution(s) to the coal community. In 1987, the Club established the Senator Jennings Randolph Award, which recognizes lifetime achievement and dedication to the utilization of coal.
